Seamlessly relocating a media studio

Broad was awarded the design and construction of the Channel 7 Relocation project, which involved the design and construction of a new, state-of-the-art television media studio to the highest of acoustic performance criteria.

The studio comprises a super-flat slab, housed within a one-storey precast concrete structure. A 36m tall communications tower, made of structural steel, is positioned on top of the suspended concrete roof slab, resulting in an overall building height of 43m.

The project required considerable project and construction management expertise.

Works were undertaken adjacent to the existing West Australian Newspapers main office and administration building, which remained operational during the building program.

The works necessitated some coordination with the operations that occurred within the existing buildings, as well as with the interior fit-out works, which were being delivered under a separate contract. In addition, the external works involved the management of the current car parking and staff access arrangements.

Scope of works included part demolition of the existing media house, services diversion works and tight project handover dates to enable Channel 7 to proceed with the television studio fit-out. 

The tight program of works was a major challenge of this project, which had to reach practical completion 22 weeks after the date of site possession.

The effective management of off-site fabrication activities and coordination of on-site construction activities were fundamental elements to the successful delivery of this project. Precast concrete panels with a complex finish as well as the structural steel tower were both constructed off-site to facilitate the very tight time constraints.
